Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly topic hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week she provide a topic and you are free to use that topic and/or variations of that topic to make your top ten list. A full list of the weekly themes can be found here.

Today’s topic covers some of my non-bookish hobbies (I’m hoping I can come up with 10).

  1. Yoga – such a great workout and I love the focus on breathing and meditation.
  2. Wine – I’m counting this as a hobby. I’m not a sommelier (nor do I think they’re any better at knowing wine than I am), but I find it interesting to find and try new wines and looking into the winery itself.
  3. Hiking/Walking – this is a new one for me. I’m trying to get out and get fresh air, so I’ve been going on trails on the outskirts of my hometown.
  4. Learning (re-learning) Arabic – One of my minors in college was Arabic, but sense being out of college, I’ve lost almost all of it. So, I’ve been re-teaching myself. Unfortunately, I live in a small, middle of nowhere, town and surprisingly, there are no Arabic speaking peoples here.
  5. Houseplants/Gardening – this is not going well. The plant I have is dying….so we’ll see what happens.
  6. Card/Board games – Hanging out with friends, enjoying a glass of wine, laughing and having fun while playing a card or board game are some of my favorite nights.
  7. Drawing/Painting – It’s bad! Downright horrible, but I still enjoy it.
  8. Letter writing – I truly think this is a lost art form and should definitely come back into fashion (also, let’s all do our part and help out the U.S. post office as much as we can).
  9. Proofreading and editing – I love doing this and students look at me weirdly when I say this (I work at a university).
  10. Movies – similar to books, anything that has a good story or where I can learn something, I’m there with bells on.

I’m surprised I managed that! Tell me some of your non-bookish hobbies in the comments below!

  1. I also love card/boardgames! What are some of your favorites?

I have two black thumbs and can’t keep a plant alive to save my life (or its life, obviously…) I also really love painting, even though I’m terrible at it. As long as I’m happy doing it, that’s good enough for me! I even posted an example of one of my paintings in my post, haha.

  2. My non-bookish hobbies include:
    Hiking/walking anywhere outside.
Eating…I really like food (I do try to keep that under control though).
Listening to music of ANY kind. I believe all music has the power to move the soul.
Playing card games and board games. No better way to spend time with friends and family.
I’m sure there are more, but that all I can come up with off the top of my head.

I love that you have letter writing on your list. I miss writing letters. I use to write with my grandmother before she passed and I don’t think I have written a hand written letter since that time.

    • I actually got back into it to help the USPS, but what made it easier was the fact that my two best friends don’t live where I do (one is in North Dakota and the other is in Ireland).

      • I love that! Distance definitely encourages writing… I remember when I first moved to Europe I was writing long emails to my friends back in Australia, but since WhatsApp entered my life I’m sad to say I’ve given it up. 🙁

  4. I have yoga on my list, too! I agree with you on the breathing and meditation aspect of yoga. I also love how yoga is physically challenging. It feels so rewarding when you master a pose!

  5. I would love to see the art of letter writing make a comeback (she says, making a mental note to try writing more letters.) And yes, support the USPS!

I have been having bad luck with plants, too. They all seem to develop a fungus or some other blight that kills them off within weeks of my bringing them home. But I will try again next spring.

Good luck with your Arabic! That’s so cool. I have been trying to learn Welsh — or rather, I was, for a while, using Duolingo. It’s probably time to pick it up again.

    I posted my TTT here.

I think I’ve officially killed my first plant, so I’ll probably start again in the spring as well!
