I started Friday Fives back when I started up the blog again and wanted to make sure I kept at least one regular post a week. This was, of course, before I knew there were others out there. But I decided to keep it, especially since I have the whole year planned out. In December, I decided to change it to Friday Fives instead to have more room for topics.
Since Cinco de Mayo was yesterday, I want to feature books that have a main character who is Mexican, Latinx, or Chicano heritage. If I err on how I’m referring to anyone, please let me know.
This book!! It is still one of my favorite books, as well as the sequel Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World. Saenz creates such great characters and the writing is so gorgeous that it breaks me apart and puts me back together.
Both Ari and Dante are Mexican-American teenagers.
A book centered on non-white, non-European Vampires?!? Yes, please sign me up. The book mainly takes place in Mexico city, so basically all the characters are Mexican.
I love a good gothic novel and this one definitely delivered. And it’s another Silvia Moreno-Garcia book. After I read this one, I needed to read all her books. Plus, I cannot wait for her next book coming out this summer The Daughter Of Doctor Moreau. As with Certain Dark Things, since this takes place in the Mexican countryside, many of the main characters are Mexican.
Another favorite book of mine. The vignettes are beautiful, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking, as Esperanza Cordero grows up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago.
I know I read this book in elementary school. It was read aloud and a have clear memories of doing the whole popcorn reading that teachers did all the time in school. I cannot for the life of me remember what happened in this book. I do remember absolutely loving the book and talking about it to everyone. I really want to buy a copy and re-read it now.
