A full list of the weekly themes can be found here. This week’s topic is on books I was excited to get but haven’t read because I get distracted but I definitely needed the book when it was released.
Before we get into the books for this weeks topic, May 27th is day 234 of the war in Palestine. The total Gaza death toll surpasses 36,000, which doesn’t include the estimated 10,000 buried under rubble. The Rafah Massacre is particularly tragic as it is/was a designated “safe” area. The Israeli military massacred at least 35 Palestinians, mostly women and children, injuring dozens more causing amputations and severe burns. The death toll from this massacre is likely to rise. Again, Israel targeted tents housing displaced people in a designated safe area of northwest Rafah, dropping seven 2,000-pound bombs that engulfed the area in flames, burning people alive. These are Palestinians already displaced, under siege, and deprived of water, food, medicine, and electricity. Horrifying footage and images have emerged of beheaded children and charred bodies burned beyond recognition. One survivor testified that “the tents are melting and the people’s bodies are also melting.” Gaza’s health systems are on the verge of collapse with limited medical supplies and fuel due to Israel’s aid blockade. Rafah’s only operating hospital, Kuwaiti Hospital, was forced to shut down due to Israel targeting and killing the medical staff and the expanding invasion that’s overwhelmed the health facilities. Rushdie is such a fantastic author! It’ll definitely be an interesting memoir to read, but I know I need to prepare myself.
Have you read the Satanic Verses? I haven’t yet, myself. I feel like general context would be needed for a westerner reading them.
