TTT | Oldest Books On My TBR

Posted November 19, 2024 by TheNonbinaryLibrarian in top ten tuesday / 11 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly topic hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Each week she provides a topic, and you are free to use that topic and/or variations of that topic to make your top ten list. A full list of the weekly themes can be found here. Today’s topic is the oldest books on my TBR, which is to say the earliest published books on my to-read list.

  • The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu, early 11th century
  • Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin, 1791 (first printed edition)
  • Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, 1862
  • Lolly Willowes by Sylvia Townsend Warner, 1926
  • All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, 1929
  • Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson, 1938
  • The Country Girls by Edna O’Brien, 1960
  • Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper, 1965

Have you read any of these? What are some of the oldest printed books on your TBR?

  1. The only one I’ve read from this list is All Quiet on the Western Front, which I’ve read a couple of times. When I picked it up the first time in middle school I was surprised to find it was written by the “other guys”. I owe it a re-read…

I think you might win this week for both oldest old book, and the widest range of publication dates. Wow!

I really liked Miss Pettigrew, it was such a fast & fun read. Hope you enjoy whichever one you pick up next.

  3. I’ve never read ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT, but my husband read it recently. He said it was super depressing. He liked it, though, and said it was very thought-provoking. I hope you enjoy it and all these others when you get to them.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday0!
