And Hades prefers it that way. He may do all the work, and Zeus may get all the credit, but at least it allows Hades to preserve the one thing he truly cares to have: his solitude. The mere mention of the Wraith of Khaos Falls is enough to keep order, and he is rarely forced to leave the shadows of Casino Asphodel.
She belongs in the spotlight...
And Persephone clawed her way out of Demeter's shadow to reach it. Now she's lead in Calliope's Cirque production but not without great cost, and there is not enough money in the world to pay off the debt accrued for the simple mistake of trusting Zeus. Though it's easier to ignore the bars when she still has room to fly.
Landing a residency at the legendary Casino Asphodel is everything she trained for. Meeting a man she'd been convinced didn't exist? She could never be prepared for that. Hades isn't prepared for her either, but it's soon evident they're a force when together. He gives her a soft place to land, and she makes him want to reach for the stars. But when Zeus ups the stakes, they must be willing to go all in, even if it means coming down from the sky. Or stepping into the light.
I actually found out about R.M. Virtues Gods of Hunger series because I was looking for a romance where Aphrodite and Hephaestus are actually in love with each other. I found Keep Me Close by R.M. Virtues. I immediately read it and fell in love with Virtues’s writing, characters, everything!
I’m now kicking myself for not reading Drag Me Up sooner. I love everything about this book. I was literally smiling, giggling, and kicking my feet like a loon, everything was so adorable. Not only is this a retelling of Hades and Persephone, but it reads similar to a mafia/mob romance as well. Hades is the mythical casino/club owner, and Persephone is the new aerialist for Hades’ club. Even though I’m usually not a fan of the instalove or love at first sight but Virtues writes it well and it works for these characters. I don’t know how to explain it.
The fact that like 99% of the characters are Black or People of Color is wonderful. I love reading about Black Joy and Black Romance and this was right up my alley. Not only did we have Black romance, but we have transgender representation with Persephone and Hades both!! Just every aspect of this was well done.
My favorite aspect of the romance was the fact that there was actual communication between the two leads, which meant there wasn’t a third-act break up. I love when couples communicate with each, as well as learn and grow as individuals to be a better person. Once Persephone tells Hades about her problems with Zeus, I love the fact that Hades doesn’t blame or accuse her of anything. He’s finally coming to terms with how Zeus has been spoiled and coddled, and even though they’re brothers, he’s not going to put up with this anymore. I’m here for all of this!
Just let me curl up in this book and never leave!
