Mini Reviews

It’s been a busy holiday season (even though I haven’t done anything for the holidays yet, I’m just already tired), so here are some recent-ish reads that I haven’t reviewed yet.

After discussing this with my book club, I actually liked this more than I thought I did. I do still wish there was a more serious conversation between Zeb and Gideon. I truly appreciated Zeb’s character overall and the fact that he was so against even getting the money due to where the money came from.

I’m really sad I didn’t love this more than I thought I would. I absolutely adored Earl Crush, but this one just really missed the mark. Most of it was just there was build-up to something, then it went away. The build-up between Cat and Georgiana fell pretty flat after they re-met. The house they were at that could’ve had more gothic elements. There was threads of things that just didn’t feel well tied together.

This really made me think about queer culture and how it affects other identities and the intersectionality of it all. There were definitely times I was reading this and thought that I wasn’t smart enough. Gorgeously written, and I definitely want to read Joshua Whitehead’s other works.

This was definitely a fun collection of Christmas, romance novellas to read during the season. I liked some more than others. Tessa Dare’s “Meet Me in Mayfair” was probably my favorite of the four, even though I’m not a fan of the instalove, this one actually managed to get me to like their relationship (and want more of it) by the end. “Heiress Alone” by Sophie Jordan was the other one I really enjoyed. I always love a story where the two main romantic leads don’t initially like each other and this one delivered. MacLean’s wasn’t terrible, I just wasn’t a fan of the friends to lovers relationship and didn’t buy the relationship in this one. I was really enjoying Shupe’s until the end when how Duke reacted, specifically what he said, to Rose the day after the dinner made me not like him anymore and not want them together.

Wow! It definitely took me a minute to get into the story but once I did, I was really blown away by the story and the characters, as well as the themes of the spirit/body binary. I don’t know much about Igbo culture but even without that knowledge, I was still able to fall into this story and Ada’s life.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I don’t know what it is about TJ Alexander’s novels (not that I’ve read a lot of them, this is just my second) but there’s always something missing. I cannot explain what, but I just don’t care if Eli and Nick-not-Nicholas get together or not. I actually skimmed over the sex scenes cause I didn’t want to read them. I did really appreciate Eli’s parents in not only accepting but really loving their son.
